Evanston, Illinois – The Cook County medical examiner’s office has ruled that the death of 10 year-old Anquan Lewis was the result of suicide.
On Febuary 3rd, it’s believed that Lewis – after being reprimanded by
his teacher – threatened to take his own life. Later in the afternoon,
Lewis was found unresponsive in a bathroom stall at Evanston’s Oakton
Elementary School. According to a report, Lewis was found hanging by
his shirt collar on a hook.
Friends and family have
described Lewis a young boy full of life, with a passion for tackle
football. In fact, the people closest to Lewis are most skeptical about
the circumstances surrounding the shocking death of a child at his own
school.
“My baby did not kill
himself,” said Angel Marshal, Lewis’s mother, during a press conference
at the school. “You all need to get in that school and look at that
stall.”
For help in finding
concrete details – specifically how the boy skipped class and made it
the bathroom unnoticed – in Lewis’s death, his family has hired a
lawyer. On top of the pending legal probe, the Illinois Department of
Children and Family Services has started its own investigation of
possible neglect by the school. –gavin philip godfrey
