Detroiters
just got one more reason to celebrate – another grand opening in
downtown Detroit. Right on the heels of the recent openings and
reopenings of the historic Book Cadillac Hotel and the stylish new Fort
Shelby Doubletree hotel, retired NBA great-turned-entrepreneur, Derrick
Coleman has given a play to our Canadian neighbors and opened a Tim
Hortons coffee shop in the downtown tourism and business district.
Located in the Millender Center on Brush Street, residents and visitors
to the Motor City can enjoy great coffee and those famous bite-sized
doughnuts along with the Canadian brand’s legendary offering of
pastries and sandwiches.”Isn’t that crazy that we’re a major
metropolitan city, and we don’t have a great place to get a cup of
coffee? We needed to change that,” says Coleman, who played for the
Detroit Pistons, among other NBA teams.
“There’s a lot of traffic [and] I’m about trying to help revitalize the
city and bring a recognized brand downtown. Hopefully, this will be the
first of many stores in the downtown area,” he says, adding “we’re
going to survive in this city.”
Coleman disclosed that he is exploring sites for other stores. “It’s
connected to City Hall, the Renaissance Center, General Motors
headquarters and it is the first [Tim Hortons] in the downtown core
area,” he explains. “There is untapped potential.”
Coleman owns several shoe stores in the Detroit area and is the founder
and CEO of the Derrick Coleman Foundation, a Michigan nonprofit
organization committed to the development and advancement of Detroit’s
youth. –roz edward
