Representin’: Chicago
Sounds like: Ol’ Dirty Bastard meets Redman
In the urban jungle known as Chicago, Drunken Monkeee has found his niche making music exactly the way he wants to. Hailing from the city’s notorious Englewood neighborhood and thanks to his affinity for martial arts, the husky MC often draws comparisons between himself and each and every Wu-Tang Clan member. For Monkeee, the kid who grew up on Kung Fu Sunday movies and dressed like Bruce Leroy of The Last Dragon, the Wu similarities are only half of the story.
“[Drunken Monkeee] is a space cadet that came through the world to save y’all through sound, through rhythm, through harmony,” he says. “I say everything that y’all are afraid to say. I make music that y’all are afraid to make.”
Monkeee’s adeptness for making out-of-the-box music shines through best on releases like The Banana Pudding Treat and tracks like, “Go Bezerk” and “Jungle Music.”
Monkeee takes immense pride in his quirkiness.
“I’m not afraid to take chances, so that allows me to be [an] unorthodox artist and performer,” he says.
Monkeee, who just wrapped a tour with Method Man and Redman, is busy working on his latest effort, Stir Fry and Potato Chips. He promises more futuristic sounds to come.
“Probably when I die in 4010, little kids will be sampling my music like we’re sampling our parent’s music,” he says. “I don’t even know what to say my music sounds like because it’s so many light years away. It’s on another planet right now.” –gavin philip godfrey
