Promotions Coordinator, True Star Magazine
Finding
the right career choice is fraught with highs and lows. True Star
Foundation endeavors – with the aid of its namesake magazine – to
bridge the gap with healthy transitions for young people coming into
early adulthood by exposing them to real-world experiences through art,
publishing, marketing and entertainment.
Nathaniel Cole is a prime example of the positive influence the True
Star Foundation has on teenagers. As a teen, he joined True Star and
worked up through the ranks to a paid position. “I joined the program
as a teen. I am 20 now. I attended Harlan High School. I joined event
planning, [and] then the journalism program. I liked event planning
[and] I went on for three years. I went for a position to be promotions
coordinator and I got it.”
Cole said the teen-centered magazine started as a small newsletter and
evolved into a full-fledged magazine. As promotions coordinator, Cole’s
job is “to make sure every school has the magazine at every event that
happens.” True Star Foundation has had a remarkable impact on Cole and
he thoroughly enjoys working with teenagers. “Showing teens that
although they are young, they can still have a dream and a goal and act
upon it,” he says.
“[Adults think] teens don’t know anything, [that] they can’t say
anything because they haven’t been anywhere. After-school programs like
True Star [are] disproving that every day. I love working with teens,
showing them and setting the example that, you too, can be a ‘true
star,’ ” says Cole. -tbinns
