After much hype and slew of hit singles released, Ryan Leslie’s self-titled debut is easily one of the best releases of the year. Strong writing and production dominate the release, held together by Leslie’s breezy, engaging vocals. While the singles, “Diamond Girl” (released back in 2007) and “How It Was Supposed to Be” are among the standouts on the 12-track release, mid-tempo tracks like “Shouldn’t Have to Wait” which explores the inevitable restlessness in relationships and the love-torn “Gibberish” are really the sonic glue that holds the album together. A mature album that readily displays his wealth of talent, Leslie’s debut proves that he’s more than worth the wait. –rogue marie
