Charlie Wilson is always at his best when he’s singing age-appropriate songs, and so is the case with his latest effort, Uncle Charlie. Songs like the smooth, “There Goes My Baby” and Can’t Live Without You” suit him well—allowing him to sound youthful without getting creepy. However, on tracks like “Shawty Come Back” and “Musta Heard” he loses his way, taking his youthful enthusiasm way too far and ending up with tracks that sound generic and forced. On this release Uncle Charlie spends a little too much time wishing for his youth—and not enough basking in the legacy that he’s built.
