Dr. Ian Smith has seen many people attempt to lose weight only to get frustrated and lose focus, so he’s been working to change their approach for the better. “When I was a columnist for Time magazine, so many people were confused about weight loss,” he says. “Then the obesity epidemic happened.”
The key to losing weight — or reaching any goal that one has set — is maintaining focus, commitment and motivation. Dr. Smith, author of The 4 Day Diet and star of VH1’s “Celebrity Fit Club,” encourages individuals to remember that motivation is imperative to attaining a goal. “When you think of motivation, you often have to think of the purity of motivation. You have to think back to a time when you completed a task — there was something that motivated you,” he shares. “My motivation for getting through medical school was the idea of getting my degree in front of my family. That’s why motivation is so idiosyncratic and so personal. Once you have that motivation in place, you can put that action plan to use.”
Dr. Smith works to help people merge that motivation with their reality. “Almost 80 percent of our women are overweight, 70 percent of our men, 25 percent of our little girls and 18 percent of our little boys,” he says.
Dr. Smith encourages those who join his 50 Pound Challenge to find and cultivate a support system with others in the program. “Those who join a team lose on average about 20 percent more than those who simply enroll as individuals,” shares Dr. Smith. “Research has shown that those people that have the greatest support, not only lose weight, but keep it off the longest. We’re able to give people all that they need to lose weight and change their life. Helping people lose weight and gain health is something that I love to do.” –todd williams
