When J Dilla lost his battle with lupus in 2006, urban music lost one of its brightest producers. Known by mainstream fans for hits like Erykah Badu’s “Didn’t Cha Know,” and the Pharcyde’s “Runnin’,” Dilla’s impact on music was always present, even if it was understated. On Dillanthology, a release that caters to music listeners who are just getting familiar with his brand of jazzy hip-hop production, some of his earlier work is also highlighted (De La Soul’s “Stakes Is High”) as well as a few of his lesser known productions (Slum Village’s “Fall in Love”). While this probably won’t satisfy diehard Dilla fans, it’s a proper introduction to a talent that left way too soon..
