In only five years, Dwyane Wade has established himself as one of the most accomplished basketball players in the world. The starting guard for the Miami Heat has participated in four All-Star games, won an NBA championship, and an Olympic gold medal. But as he continues to make strides on the court, his messy divorce has garnered headlines in tabloids across the nation. In February, Wade sued his estranged wife, Siohvaughn Wade, after she made allegations that he infected her with an STD. As his personal life plays out in the public arena, Wade is trying to remain focused on the game of basketball during the final stretch of the NBA’s regular season. –amir shaw

The Miami Heat struggled to win games last season. Has the team exceeded expectations with its fifth place ranking in the Eastern Conference this season?
Coming in to the season, we knew that we had a young team and that the expectations would be very low. But we came to training camp and began to play basketball early. We’re now battling for the fourth seed. We have to continue to keep growing … and we have to win more games.

With a young team, you have to be more vocal. Define your role as a leader.
I have to be more vocal. It’s a challenge every day, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I think these young guys have come in and helped us a lot with their confidence and the way they play the game.

What have you learned from your coaches in the past?
I have taken something from every coach that I have played for. My college coach instilled a lot in me. College was a step before this level that really prepared me for the NBA.

Speaking of college, are you excited about March Madness?
I follow NCAA basketball very closely. I pay attention to my alma mater [Marquette University]. There are some good teams this year. UConn and Villanova have played well. March Madness will be great basketball. NBA players often pay close attention to the tournament.
