How does your show benefit gospel artists?
“R&B has a direction. Country music has a target and addresses a certain class of people. Inspirational music is so diverse because it services the whole body. If I fell down and needed some encouragement, I probably [would] need to call on the Canton Spirituals, Jesse Dixon or Shirley Caesar. But then if something triumphant happens in my life, I’m so happy about it — I might want to pick up Kirk Franklin or Fred Hammond. This genre of music services the whole body of Christ.”

Why did you go on a national concert tour to support the homeless?
“There are 5.3 million families that [became] homeless last year. They are projecting 6.8 million families [will] be homeless this year. Those numbers have already been exceeded due to foreclosures, natural disasters and vets coming home from Afghanistan.”

An act of this magnitude deserves recognition. A humanitarian award, Nobel Peace Prize …
“That’s very humbling for me. I can talk about homelessness, music and a lot of things. But when people talk about giving me accolades and awards, I’m just thankful and I don’t know what more to say outside of that.”

What’s your perspective on independent artists?
“We’re living in a great time for independent artists to get out there and share their talents.”
