With his sophomore album, Gorilla Zoe is clearly trying to push creative boundaries. And when he’s given the opportunity to do so, it works quite well. The lead single, “Lost,” is the most blaring example of Zoe’s newfound musical direction as his raspy vocals creep lazily over the slow, storytelling track. Other standouts on the album include the dance-tinged “Echo,” which shows Zoe displaying his diversity. While songs like “You Know What It Is,” featuring Rick Ross finds him sticking to the script that gained him notoriety, Zoe clearly is on a new musical mission this go-round. One can only hope that his sound will keep expanding. –rouge marie
