In August of 2007, Daniel Meachum stepped down as Michael Vick’s attorney after disputes with Vick’s other attorneys regarding the illegal dog fighting case. “I represented Michael Vick until there was a disagreement on the theory of the case,” Meachum said. “I don’t plead young men.”
Vick’s plea eventually led to a 23-month federal prison sentence and his life was essentially left in shambles. This week, Vick rehired Meachum to represent him for the next three years. Meachum’s first order of duty will be to counsel Vick during his bankruptcy case in Virginia. He will also work to get Vick reinstated to the NFL once he is released this summer. Meacham hopes to help Vick grow as a person by surrounding him with people who can provide the appropriate guidance off of the football field.
“My concern is helping Michael get back to his family and surround[ing] him with people like Julius Erving, Tony Dungy and Bishop T. D. Jakes,” Meachum said. “We need people around him who can help him and his family get back on the right track. I’m more interested in that than anything else. He has served his time. He’s remorseful for his mistakes. I hope they give him another opportunity, but football will take care of itself.” –amir shaw
