Shining His Light
Jamiel Jackson, Sound Engineer and After School Program Aide
Jamiel Jackson and his wife share many wonderful things that make their marriage work. One of those things is their passion for children and the nurturing of their success. In fact, his wife co-founded one of the city’s after school programs where Jackson assists as an aide, offering students hands-on experience working with music.
Ranging in age from 13–18, Jackson’s “Beatshoppers” learn to DJ, produce and assist with sound engineering.
“Today’s youth definitely need some direction … it instills a lot of confidence,” says Jackson, explaining that he organized the program to give musically gifted students a chance to be successful.
And he doesn’t make it easy for them; he makes the students work extra hard.
“All they see is the glitz and glamour [in the music industry]; they don’t see the hard work,” he says.
While it’s not always easy, the students trust his leadership. This is because they know Jackson, who’s a sound engineer by trade, has lots of experience in the industry.
In fact, music he produced with his company, ProBlk, will be featured in Chicago Pulaski Jones, an upcoming film directed by Cedric the Entertainer and starring another Chicago native, Kel Mitchell. He’s also featured on Wu-Tang Clan member Cappadonna’s new album and will be releasing his latest solo project, House of the Rising Sun, this summer. While he’s enjoying the success, Jackson keeps his feet firmly planted in the trenches with his kids.
“I know I have a certain light that I need to share and that’s what I’m doing,” he says. –tbinns
