‘Hawthorne’ Star Jada Pinkett Smith Dishes On Friendships, Family and Rumors About Her and Will
“I guess the thing that I value most in friendship is truth.”
Jada Pinkett Smith is one half of one of Hollywood’s most powerful Power Couples. In her nearly 15 years in the spotlight — 12 of which she’s spent married to superstar husband Will Smith — the diminutive beauty has had virtually every aspect of her personal life dissected. Her friendships have long been a cornerstone of her life, and with a tremendously active professional and personal life, Mrs. Pinkett Smith appreciates every relationship she’s forged over the years. “What I value most are friends that can allow me to just be Jada,” says the star. “[That’s] very difficult in this world that we live in [in terms of] Hollywood and all that it brings. I think the saddest thing about having this lifestyle and having the type of success that my family and I have had is that you’re surrounded by people that love you, but can’t help envy[ing] you. It makes it very difficult to maintain true relationships.”
Producing and starring in the upcoming TNT medical drama “Hawthorne,” the b-girl, actress, producer and heavy metal singer won’t allow anyone to put her in a box. “I think the people would be surprised to know a lot of things about me because the public doesn’t know me at all. What you see is definitely not all that you get.”
From friendships to the status of she and Will’s marriage, Jada has laughed off virtually every would-be scandal that has been thrown her way. But what’s the craziest rumor she’s ever heard about herself? “That my marriage with Will is fake because he’s gay and I’m gay,” she says laughing. “That we’re scientologists. I mean, it goes on and on. There are so many of them. It’s some stupid rumors out there, but I don’t really trip on that.” The Baltimore native is still just as grounded as ever, and has a healthy outlook on the never-ending rumor mill that surrounds most of Tinseltown’s biggest names. “You’ve got to keep people guessing and keep people wondering. When people think they’ve got you made out it’s over,” she says matter-of-factly. “So I welcome that. As long as people are talking that means you’re still relevant.” –todd Williams
