Top 5 Hip-Hop Movies of All Time
Hip-hop culture has always secretly held a fascination with the bright lights of Hollywood. Ironically, Hollywood has shared a similar admiration for the sights, sounds and personalities that comprise one of music’s most influential genres. As Hollywood and hip-hop began to express their mutual admiration on celluloid, classic movies became the welcomed by-product of their union. 5. Hustle & Flow – We’ve never been a fan of movies where the characters appear sweaty throughout the duration of the film, but we concede that Hustle & Flow provided one of the most honest depictions of what it’s like to make music and hustle to be heard. With an Oscar nomination for Terrence Howard, and Three 6 Mafia’s Oscar win for Best Original Song (Lord, help us all), it’s hard to deny this film a place on such an exclusive list.
4. Krush Groove – This is arguably one of the worst acted movies of all time. But when a movie is able to feature music and acting from Run-D.M.C., The Fat Boys, LL Cool J, Kurtis Blow and Sheila E., you have to give it some burn. At the time, it was the culture’s finest “for us, by us” movie moment.
3. Brown Sugar – How revelatory was Brown Sugar upon its release? The mind-set of the culture had been evolving over the years, and this flick honestly captured the energy of hip-hop purists who were intent on making good music while conducting sound business. (Isn’t everyone doing that now?)
2. Juice – This was Tupac’s coming out party, and arguably his best acting performance. This film screamed hip-hop. Besides, who could forget Omar Epps with the headphones pressed to his ear tapping into his inner DJ?
1. Wild Style – This film was the first one to do a sound job of illustrating the birth of hip-hop through film. From the park jams, to the early emcee shows, Wild Style pulses with an upbeat energy that matched the promise of a burgeoning culture.
