Jonsin, aka James Scheffer, pretty much hijacked popular music in 2008 — one of the most prolific producing years of the new millennium — when “Lollipop” and “Whatever You Like” spent a combined 11 weeks at No.1, an entire career for more pedestrian producers. In recent years, the man formerly known as DJ Jealous J in Miami, has amassed a monstrous mountain of hits for artists including: “I Run” for Slim Thug, “Unpredictable” for Jamie Foxx, “Kiss Me Through the Phone” for Soulja Boy, “Let’s Go” for Trick Daddy, and “Grind With Me” for Pretty Ricky.
After he rinsed dry of the celebratory libations at his Grammy party in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jonsin strapped himself back into his sonic laboratory to formulate new hits for the likes of Beyoncé, B.o.B, Michelle Williams, Jordin Sparks, Backstreet Boys and Motown. You almost want to look down at his hands to see if they glow in the dark.
Despite all this, Jonsin speaks of his feats with about as much excitement as a man mowing the lawn. “I feel the same. The people around me look at me differently. I’m still the same guy who grew up loving hip-hop,” Jonsin says in a monotone baritone. Guess he has to keep his emotional ship steady as he shoulders being an in-demand producer, label owner (Rebel Rock Entertainment), production company owner and parent, all while working on an innovative Web site project called beatbakery.com that provides another platform to channel his hypnotic hits.
Now that he has undisputedly procured collateral and clout in the industry, Rebel Rock is perched to dribble out more hits than a pigeon on Ex-Lax. “Rebel Rock is a record company and production company, and we are set up to sign real artists — singers, songwriters, producers — people who can do more than one thing, you know? We believe that the artists are not only going to grow the label, but the label is going to be built from who we sign,” Jonsin says.
If Rebel Rock is built the same way he sculpts and molds hits, then Jonsin is going experience more years like 08. –terry shropshire
