There is a truism for today’s artists which also applies to multifaceted musicians Misfitz Beats: The invisible umbilical chord which connects today’s hip-hop heads to the golden age of R&B, funk and disco also helps to birth ingenious creativity and ignite innovation. From this tilled musical soil, Misfitz Beats’ True Beats and J-Proof Beats are blooming as all-around creators — writing, producing and spitting rhythmic ruminations over booming beats.

“The ‘70s is like the real music, it’s the essence,” says J-Proof. “We try to mix a bit of old school and new school. [To] tell you the truth, we’re a mixture of a lot of producers. We listen to a lot of different type of music. We show a variety of compositions from each producer. We just kind of mix it all together and turn it into our own and put our own little twist to it.”

Misfitz Beats is continuing the trademark of working to create the impossible, which is how many ATL-based artists have become genre-defining, multiplatinum phenoms. Their very name says everything about the group’s mindset, focus and direction that one needs to know.

“I thought of Misfitz Beats. But I didn’t want the name ‘misfits’ and what came along with that name,” says True. “So we thought of an acronym: A Man In Search of Insurmountable Things. … [We’re] trying to go in our own lane, [we’re] not doing the same thing that everybody [else is] doing … that’s how you make a name.”

The group cites icons Ciara, André 3000, Lil Wayne T.I., Ludacris, Jeezy and Mannie Fresh as inspirations. And as they continue with their eclectic production, they may achieve a similar status, or perhaps more. –terry shropshire
