Candace Corey: Beauty Uncovered
Celebrity makeup artist Candace Corey has spent the last 23 years making people feel beautiful. It’s an arduous task given the country’s distorted image of beauty, but it’s one that she readily strives to achieve.
“The best part of what I do is being able to help people see their own beauty,” says Corey, who has worked for “Access Hollywood,” Oprah Magazine “E!” and Rolling Stone, among others. “A lot of times we are our hardest judge, we see only the negative in ourselves. When I see people sit down, I have a tendency to focus on the thing that I like the most about somebody’s features, and when I help them to see that it changes how they feel about themselves.”
Corey was enthusiastic about her involvement in Procter & Gamble’s My Black Is Beautiful, a national tour that uplifts women with a slew of beauty oriented-events from oral health care to massages and makeovers.
“Growing up and not always appreciating my unique beauty and now learning to appreciate [it], I really enjoy being able to spread [that admiration] to other people,” she says.
Having worked with everyone Eva Pigford to Kevin Garnett, Corey is excited to see the way that beauty standards have evolved since she was a child.
“I remember when I was little and I would make my lips look smaller because I thought my lips were too full or I would wish my skin was lighter,” she says. “Seeing how that perception of beauty has changed has really made me excited.” –jh
