‘I just really kicked down the doors at the record label and just ran in taking money.’
Love him or hate him, Soulja Boy is running hip-hop right now. In the past year, he’s had two songs chart on Billboard’s Top 10 simultaneously — “Kiss Me Through the Phone” and “Turn My Swag On,” his Yums clothing line is picking up speed, and he’s set to introduce his own video game and star in a movie.
We caught up with the controversial youngster for an off-the-cuff interview, where SB “goes ham” on a few old industry standards and talks freely about his old “beefs,” haters, and why he’s the future of hip-hop. Featuring commentary from Interscope executives who traveled with him on the road, the DJ who helped put him on, Greg Street, and more, this is a side of Soulja Boy you’ve never seen.
Excerpt: “The whole MySpace and YouTube, it’s just like the next level of the music industry … I just always try to stay like, a couple of steps ahead of the game, so I had that on lock way back then. Now I got rappers just now catching on to it, doing blogs and stuff like that. But I’m three steps ahead of them.”
