What’s the craziest thing somebody has ever done while you were DJing?
The craziest thing somebody said to me is “I’ll have this girl do something if you play this record.” [laughing]
What’s your favorite city to DJ in?
My new favorite city is Lagos, Nigeria. In the states, it’s either New Orleans or Miami.
Is payola dead?
At the clubs people pay to play. That’s not always the best way though, because you end up spending money that you don’t have to. Usually if you talk to the DJ before he gets on, if they like it, they’ll play it.
Name some of the artists you’ve helped put on.
In some crazy way, I helped Cam’Ron out a lot because when he first left Bad Boy, he was switching management and they didn’t really like the song that he came up with. But I was like, that song is crazy. So they weren’t sure if they were gonna mess with him, but then I said I liked it so they were like alright. That ended up being one of his biggest songs, “Oh Boy.”
What are the three tips you would give to up and coming DJs?
1. Learn your craft, I think a lot of DJs especially with today’s technology, you don’t have to know it like you did when you were using vinyl. But DJs who don’t learn the craft and don’t really understand how records work, they can always be outshined by DJs that do.
2. In these times marketing is important, so make sure your mixtape game is popping.
3. The best DJs that get work all the time are DJs that can do all types of parties. The more genres that you can play in, the more checks you get.
