Jazz legend Fats Waller would be proud. Why? Because Ain’t Misbehavin’, the Tony Award-winning musical tribute to his storied career, is still resonating within the community after 30 years. Featuring 30 famous high-energy tunes such as “Ain’t Misbehavin,” “Honeysuckle Rose,” and “The Joint is Jumpin,” the show—currently featured at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles through Sunday, May 31st—continues to provide a stunning multi-sensory treat that bridges the generational divide and exposes a younger generation to a fascinating new world.

Bob Verini of Variety recently raved, “Fats Waller must have been wonderful company on the evidence of two blissful hours spent with this peerless showcase of his art.” The talented cast of which he spoke includes Armelia McQueen, a cast member from the original Broadway production. A venerated actress in her own right, McQueen understands the value of the show, having witnessed its benefits firsthand. “When people leave the show, the atmosphere is so festive because they are singing all of the songs,” she shares. “But the greater gift is having the young kids learn about Fats Waller, since most of them knew nothing about him. I think this show puts a spark in them and encourages them to learn about their history.”

While educating our future generations is certainly critical, McQueen also hopes the work of her cast, which includes Debra Walton, Roz Ryan, Doug Eskew and Eugene Barry-Hill, will also spawn action in the here and now. “We want our people to come out and support the theater,” she says. “It is very important that the black community comes out and support our actors, and not just our rappers. They will go to comedy club or a rap concert, but I want them to come out and enjoy the theater as well.” –erika townsend
