One of the most dynamic music festivals in the country culminated this past Memorial Day weekend at Atlanta’s oldest city park, the historic Grant Park. The 32nd Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival featured performances by revered jazz musicians and groups like Freddy Cole, Dionne Farris and Hiroshima. The Atlanta Jazz Festival is one of the nation’s largest free jazz festivals. Thanks to companies like American Family Insurance, a corporate superhero who stepped up as this year’s title sponsor in light of the nation’s troubled economic conditions, jazz enthusiasts enjoyed 31 Days of Jazz, a Neighborhood Jazz Series, a Youth Band Jazz Competition, and a Kids Zone, as well as many other family friendly activities and events around the city.
The Atlanta Jazz Festival is a cultural experience that entertains an array of jazz aficionados and exposes up and coming enthusiasts and artists to the rich heritage of jazz. Preserving this tradition is paramount for Mayor Shirley Franklin, who shared “Jazz is America’s indigenous art form and we have a responsibility to keep it here for future generations.” –yvette caslin
