Mos Def returns with The Ecstatic, and while the title may be a little overly optimistic, the contents are some of the best he’s released since 1999’s classic Black On Both Sides. The album is decidedly low-key, but in the way that rewards the listener upon repeat listens. “Auditorium” is a stellar collabo with another of hip-hop’s most celebrated lyricists, the legendary Slick Rick. But the best song pairs him with his favorite partner, Talib Kweli, over one of the breeziest productions from the late J. Dilla. –dusty culpepper
