“I’m So Wavy”: Is Jay-Z and Game Beef The 2009 2Pac vs. Biggie?

alt
As soon as the first emcees picked up microphones, beefing has been a part of hip-hop. It goes back even farther, actually — the tradition of battling MCs actually has roots in “the dozens,” a clever game of one-upmanship that black folks used to humorously mock each other for fun. But in rap, beef is often a way to establish oneself as hip-hop’s alpha male. From KRS-One vs. MC Shan to N.W.A. vs. Ice Cube, beefs have fueled the rise of some of the biggest names in the history of the genre.

And now … this …

West Coast star The Game has faded in and out of relevancy in the past few years and has a bit of a beef-heavy history. His name rose rapidly after his 2005 debut, Documentary, and well-publicized beef and split with his former crew, G-Unit. He and fellow rap star 50 Cent engaged in a war of words for months that escalated to actual gunshots. Then there was an equally publicized “reconciliation” (organized by Min. Louis Farrakhan, no less) … which of course, rapidly disintegrated into even more beef. Now, the L.A. native has squared off against none other than Hov himself, superstar rapper-mogul Jay-Z. Releasing the diss record, “I’m So Wavy,” on the Internet, The Game unloads on Mr. Carter — attacking his age, and even his superstar wife, pop star Beyoncé.

This feud is similar in some ways to hip-hop’s most notorious feud, the mid-‘90s rivalry between the late hip-hop legends 2Pac and Notorious B.I.G. Like that beef, there is a bi-coastal element to this disagreement, with the West Coast half of the feud being the most vocal. Also, similar to 2Pac’s attack on Biggie’s estranged wife, R&B singer Faith Evans — The Game had choice words for Jay-Z’s vocally gifted spouse. Unlike that feud, however, which featured the two biggest rappers of their era at the height of their popularity, this beef features one man (Jay-Z) who is already a 15-year veteran and legend in hip-hop circles — who is arguably above beefing with any comers in the game today. The other — decidedly louder — individual (The Game) is a slowly fading star who seems to desperately need the publicity. FYI — his album is slated to drop soon.  –todd williams
