DJ Brandi Garcia: Party Girl

If
you’re looking to get your party started, DJ Brandi Garcia is probably
the girl you need to call. She’s been rocking for 13 years, and in the
four years that she’s been in Houston has established herself as one of
the city’s most popular DJs. Botom line: the Florida native knows how
to move the crowd. We caught up with her between gigs to get her take
on the industry and the ever-changing role of the DJ. –jh

Do you believe in pay for play?
I don’t do pay for play because I think it’s morally wrong. I think you should play a song if you like it.

How has the role of the DJ changed?
The role of the radio DJ is almost no more, because everything is
corporate run. It’s really moved over to satellite radio and certain
clubs, especially underground clubs.

What do you say to people that are mad that only five songs get played on the radio?
Honestly, get satellite radio, or put together your own cds because it
is what it is, you’re not going to be able to change it.

Is it hard being a female in a male-dominated industry?
It’s a double-edged sword because on one hand you’d think you’d stand
out because you’re one of the few doing it — but then you have to fight
a lot harder to get respect because they think you’re just a pretty
chick that stands behind the turntables.

What’s your go-to song to get the party started?
The generic song that in general gets people dancing is Beyonce “Get Me
Bodied.” If you play music for the ladies you’ll always win. That’s
where male DJs make the mistake. You have to DJ for the ladies.

Do a lot of rappers hit on you?
All the time. That’s always funny.

What’s their approach?
A lot of times they won’t get at me personally, they’ll have someone in
their crew try to approach me. Either that, or they’re extra bold.

Would you ever date a rapper.
I don’t like to never say never. It depends on the situation.
