Nas, Kelis and the Reality of Celebrity Marriages

 alt
Celebrity marriages have always captivated the public. The idea of two successful celebrities tying the knot can offer a real-life model of storybook love. However, many celebrity marriages have not had fairy-tale endings. Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston, Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmunds, and Russell Simmons and Kimora Lee all had trouble maintaining their relationships.

Recently, Nas and Kelis became the latest celebrity couple to part ways and Nas will pay a hefty price for the split. According to the Associated Press, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Louis Meisinger ordered Nas to pay $44,000 a month to Kelis for support until a court hearing in September.

So what causes celebrity love to end in divorce? Here are several examples of why high-profile marriages unraveled. –a.r.

Jealousy – Most celebrities are ego-driven. If one partner is making more money or experiencing more success, it can cause the partner to become envious. Celebrity husbands who are forced to play second fiddle (i.e. Eric Benet, who was once married to Halle Berry) may feel the need to overcompensate in other areas.

Lack of Privacy – As the dissemination of information increases with blogs and social networking, celebrity couples may find that every aspect of their relationship is scrutinized publicly. Gossip, hearsay and negative press can create enough friction to destroy a relationship.

Career Killer – Although a few celebrities capitalize on marrying someone who is in the limelight, sometimes a union can lead to career suicide. Case in point: Bobby Brown annihilated Whitney Houston’s good-girl persona until the songbird was seen as a drug-addicted has-been. And Mike Tyson never regained his unrivaled prowess after being KO’d by his divorce from Robin Givens.

High Expectations – Most fairy tales end with the line, “They lived happily ever after.” However, those fairy tales rarely explore what happens after the prince falls in love with the princess. After the costly wedding and fantasy honeymoon, celebrity couples must deal with each other’s personalities on a daily basis. The public expects celebrity couples to always display signs of happiness. Bad days are often magnified and could lead to more pressure to maintain a “perfect” marriage.
