Being a female rapper is
no easy feat—even if you are signed to Lil Wayne’s label and have
endorsements from everybody from Drake to Gucci Mane. Ask Nicki Minaj.
While the rhyming vixen definitely oozes sexuality on her acclaimed
mixtape, Beam Me Up Scotty, she can actually spit, which puts
her in an entirely different category than some of her sexed up peers.
We caught up with Nicki, who is currently on the Young Money America’s
Most Wanted Tour to get her take on being a sex symbol and her place in
the game. –jh
What does being sexy mean to you?
Confidence.
Dudes love you. How does it feel to be considered a sex symbol?
I guess everyone individually decides who is a sex symbol to them. I
don’t really have thoughts on that. I think everyone’s idea of that is
different. If I am a sex symbol to people than so be it.
What’s the main message you’re trying to get across with your music?
I’m trying to give a message that females are powerful and when you get
females to back you, you can rule the world and that’s what im on my
way to doing. I have tons of girls that have really created the Nicki
Minaj brand, so I cater to them.
A lot of female MCs don’t write their own lyrics. Why is it important for you to write?
It’s important for me to write because I have something to say. I can’t
speak for anyone else, but that’s why I write my own lyrics.
Do you feel like you’re the new leader of the pack of female rappers emerging?
I’m part of the new exciting breed of hip hop. When I think of myself,
I just think of a new addition to the game. I don’t think of myself as
a female rapper. So it’s not about being a leader of the female rappers
or anything, it’s just about being a leader of an innovative new
culture of people that are daring to be different and being themselves.
What do you think about blogs? Gift or Curse?
They’re great. I can’t knock their hustle, they do what they do, I do what I do, I think it’s a nice merge.
