Unlike most rappers, when J Futuristic (formerly J Money) starts talking about his past, you don’t automatically cringe in disbelief, probably because unlike a lot of artists, he doesn’t glamorize it.

“When I got out [of jail] I wanted some different sh-t,” says J, having spent four years in prison for trafficking marijuana says. “I wanted to know where I was going and I wanted to have some kind of direction.”

After his release he spent some time managing the group The Truth, and although they received regional buzz, J decided it was time for him to get his own shine on. “We were doing shows with Young Dro,” he recalls. “I saw the group was getting into it with each other.” So, he decided to try his hand at the rap game. “I took the methods and heard the stuff they were talking about in their rhymes,” he says.

“They were really talking about me.”

Tired of hearing what he calls fake rappers talking about a lifestyle he actually lived J, decided to try his hand at rhyming. And it worked. His first hit was “Trapper of the Year” with Shawty Lo, which was featured on his highly-circulated mixtape Trapper of the Year with DJ Scream.

But of course, his biggest hit to date has been “First Name, Last Name,” a track that landed the rapper on nearly everyone’s up-and-coming list. Now officially legit, the rapper is happy to celebrate his newly established standard of living.

“I liked the rap lifestyle,” he says, “it’s like the life of a trapper, but better because you don’t have to worry about the police.” –jacinta howard
