In the fickle music business, fame is
fleeting — today’s favorite pop star can quickly become tomorrow’s
has-been. Singer Christina Milian grasped this early on, and diligently
worked to expand her options. By doing so, when the music wasn’t as
prosperous, she could always fall back on something else. That
something else was acting, and it continues to make Milian relevant to
the entertainment community while she works to recalibrate her singing
career. Milian sat down with rolling out to talk about her latest project, Bring It On: Fight To The Finish, her views on life and her return to music.
Are there any similarities between you and the character you portray in the film?
There are a lot of similarities. She is at a point where she is driven,
and even though she’s young, she knows what she wants and works really
hard to get it. I think that at that age especially, I knew what I
wanted, I worked really hard at it, and I didn’t let anybody tell me
no. So that’s what I love about this character, and what I think makes
us so much alike.
What made this film special and what separates it from the other movies in the Bring It On franchise?
I think what made it special was for me was a lot of the
behind-the-scenes moments. I think we all connected well. [Director
Billie Woodruff] and I already had a friendship … so it was great that
we got to work together on this film. And on top of that for it to be
music inspired, the movie was within the world that we both love, and
it just made for a really good
time.
You have a new album coming out. What does the transition into this stage of your career sound like?
This
is a beautiful time in my life right now … especially with me growing
into my womanhood. You get to hear that in the music. The album is
called Elope and it’s really about me becoming a woman and doing things my own way.
