September Flicks Feature

The month of September does more than provide one last opportunity in
the calendar year to sit by the pool and relax with friends. It also
gives film enthusiasts a first glimpse at fall movie magic. Here are
seven September flicks that deserve your consideration. –dewayne rogers

alt  Gamer
Release Date: 9/4
Starring: Gerard Butler, John Leguizamo, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges
The Lowdown:

So this movie is about prisoners who fight in a popular virtual reality
game in hopes of one day earning their freedom? But wait, haven’t I
seen this before? Yes. Gamer has the exact same premise as last summer’s Death Race, with the only difference being … actually, there is no difference.
alt Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself
Release Date: 9/11
Starring: Taraji P. Henson, Mary J. Blige
The Lowdown:
Tyler Perry brings to the screen another one of his popular stage
plays, continuing his bi-annual feeding for his loyal fan base. The
film, Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself, stars Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson with appearances by Mary J. Blige, Gladys Knight, and of course, Madea.
alt  Whiteout
Release Date: 9/11
Starring: Alex O’Loughlin, Kate Beckinsale, Gabriel Macht, Tom Skeritt
The Lowdown:
Kate Beckinsale gets top billing in this thrilling crime drama. But the
real star of this film is Mother Nature, as the frigid Antarctic
conditions do little to help a murder investigation before the sun sets
for six months.
alt The Informant
Release Date: 9/18
Starring: Matt Damon, Melanie Lynskey, Scott Bakula
The Lowdown: Matt Damon starring with Steve Soderbergh directing — sounds like a winning combination to me. In The Informant,
the pair tackles the real life case of Mark Whitacre, the highest
ranking executive to ever turn whistle-blower. Once again, Damon is
masterful, and Soderbergh’s directorial hand is as steady as ever.
alt Burning Plain
Release Date: 9/18
Starring: Charlize Theron, Kim Basinger, Joaquim de Almeida
The Lowdown: You can’t really lose with Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger as a film’s top draws. Burning Plain finds Theron delving into a secret, sexually charged past that will leave women gasping for air, and men begging for more.
alt FAME
Release Date: 9/25
Starring: Kristy Flores, Asher Book, Paul Iacono, Paul McGill, Naturi Naughton
The Lowdown: This latest incarnation of Fame
is a successful revival of Alan Parker’s 1980’s big and small screen
sensation. With Naturi Naughton leading the way, the Fame brand may
actually succeed at “living forever.”
alt Surrogates
Release Date: 9/25
Starring: Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Boris Kodjoe
The Lowdown:
Bruce Willis stars in a high-tech thriller that will leave you
questioning the moral good of technological advances. Keep an eye out
for Boris Kodjoe, who makes a welcomed return to the big budget film
circuit.
