‘Right Round’ recently broke the record for the most digital sales in one week.
What were your thoughts when you were recording that single?
I was trying to broaden my horizon. While growing up, I was a fan of Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, NWA and 2 Live Crew. I was always versatile when it came to music. In Florida, you have a mixture of cultures and I take it upon myself to venture out and put
those influences into my music. With ‘Right Round’ [produced by Dr. Love], the fact that I could use my melodic rhyme scheme is what made the record as hot as it is.

What was the motivation behind the new album, R.O.O.T.S.?
R.O.O.T.S stands for Route of Overcoming the Struggle. I got a chance to go to Africa for the MTV Awards and it was around the time Barack Obama was elected. Being in Africa, I saw people dedicated to walking 30 miles just to get a drink of clean water. It’s more than partying on this album. I speak on the everyday struggle. This album is well-rounded.

The 50 Cent and Rick Ross beef is another topic that has been discussed a lot recently. You were a label mate with Rick Ross. What are your feelings on what has transpired between the two?
I look up to 50 Cent and Rick Ross. Both of them have inspired my music. Ross is my boy who grew up in my neighborhood and I’m cool with 50. 50 inspired me by establishing himself financially through music and business. But when it comes to their beef — to each [his] own.
