Dear White America,
I’m not referring to all of “white America” with that broad greeting. But there is a large contingent of you that’s outraged that President Obama would take the time to speak directly to your children on the value of responsibility. How dare he!
I mean seriously, when you really look at the transcript from the president’s speech, it just confirms your fears that this nation is hell bound and spiraling into the clutches of socialism. Take this excerpt for example:
“… at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world — and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. “
The nerve of him! How dare he encourage your kids to fulfill their responsibilities in life? How dare he suggest they pay attention to their teachers, and listen to you at home? But most importantly, how dare he ask them to put in the necessary work to succeed in life? This guy has some nerve.
But that’s what usually happens to these black guys when they get a little power. They start stepping out of line, and begin to feel like they can say and do anything. Oh, don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me … I’m not going to say anything. I wouldn’t want anyone calling you racist. But just so we can be on the same page, that is the real problem with his speech, right? I mean, it has to be the source and not the message since presidents before him (Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush) all gave similar back-to-school messages. When you look at it, the content itself is actually great. But do we really need a black man filling our children’s head with all kinds of progressive ideas? That’s downright un-American … and it’s unacceptable.
Now let’s take break from the sarcasm.
It’s a sad day when a positive man is unable to encourage students to be all that they can be without receiving major backlash from the general public. Let me ask you this: is the idea of our president inspiring your kids really that vile and disgusting? And does the source of your anger come from a darker place — a place that starts with the color of his skin? Now, I really didn’t want to make this about race … I really didn’t. But what else is there? If you can provide a more logical explanation, then I’m all ears. But until then, I think I’ll stick with the race card.
Sincerely yours,
DeWayne Rogers, A Non-Threatening Black Man
