Allan Houston, Former NBA All-Star Says Father Knows Best
During
his playing career, former NBA All-Star Allan Houston was recognized as
one of the most dynamic scorers in the game. He was also able to steer
clear of the troubles that hinder a lot of young men when they are
unprepared to handle the money and fame that come with being an NBA
player. Throughout Houston’s career, his coach and father, Wade
Houston, offered him pointers on the court and made sure that he was an
exceptional young man off the court. The father and son duo recently
teamed up to host the first annual Father Knows Best basketball tour. –amir shaw
What do you want men to get from the Father Knows Best basketball tour?
We always want fathers and sons, or men and their mentees to come away
with the experience [that] they’ve not only learned about the
fundamentals of basketball, but they also learn about the legacy of
what it really means to be a real father to their sons.
What are some of the things you teach?
We talk about the simple fundamentals of shooting. My father and I do a
shooting clinic and we take the kids through ball handling, passing and
teamwork. But we also teach the fundamentals of faith, integrity,
sacrifice, and hard work.
What important things did you learn from your father?
The thing that I learned from my father at an early age is that it’s
not about what you have, but what you do with it. And it’s about who
you are as a person because that will outweigh the material things.
That’s really what true character is. It’s not all about having money
or wealth. You have to know how to deal with it so that you can use it
in the right way.
