Chris Brown

The Dilemma: Accused of beating girl friend Rihanna, Chris Brown instantly became the new face of domestic violence. In an attempt to show contrition, Brown posted his first apology in an online video.

The Apology:

“Since February, my attorney has advised me not to speak out, even though ever since the incident I wanted to publicly express my deepest regret and accept full responsibility. Although I will do some interviews and answer some questions in the future, I felt that it was time that you heard directly from me that I am sorry.”

President Barack Obama

The Dilemma: After Henry Louis Gates is arrested at his home by a white police officer, President Barack Obama responded by saying that the officer acted “stupidly.” In the ensuing controversy, President Obama fine-tuned his comments.

The Apology: “This has been ratcheting up, and I obviously helped to contribute to ratcheting it up. I want to make clear that in my choice of words, I think I unfortunately gave an impression that I was maligning the Department and Sgt. Crowley specifically, and I could’ve calibrated those words differently.”

Michael Vick

The Dilemma:
Days after pleading guilty to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge, Michael Vick apologized to the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons organization, and to the kids who looked up to him.

The Apology:
“I apologize for all the things that I’ve done and that I’ve allowed to happen. I want to apologize to my Atlanta Falcons teammates, my coach, the National Football League, and to all the young kids out there for my immature acts. I’m very disappointed in myself. Dogfighting is a terrible thing and I … reject it.”

Serena Williams

The Dilemma:
On the verge of losing to Kim Clijsters at the U.S. Open, Serena Williams threatened the line judge by saying, “I’m [expletive] going to take this [expletive] ball and shove it down your [expletive] throat, you hear that? I swear to God.” Williams was disqualified for her conduct.

The Apology: “I just really wanted to apologize sincerely, because I’m a very prideful person and I’m a very intense person and a very emotional person. I wanted to offer my sincere apologies to anyone that I may have offended. I think the whole point of learning from your mistakes is not to do the same thing.”
