There has been a disturbing trend over the course of Chris Brown’s “Please Forgive Me” Tour. In case you haven’t been paying attention, C. Breezy began his tour with the really-sincere-but-heavily-scripted Rihanna apology and continued this week. On Wednesday, Sept. 2 night, Mr. “Who Run It” appeared on “Larry King Live” to talk for the first time at length about the night he beat up his girlfriend, one of the biggest pop stars in the world.
Now, far be it for ro to mock the seriousness of Mr. Brown’s situation, so this isn’t a superficial jab at the kid. But, in both his apology video and appearance on Larry King, Brown has been dressed rather … strangely. In the video, Brown was wearing what appeared to be some sort of futuristic T-shirt/button-across blouse thing, and for his highly anticipated Larry King interview, the singer was sporting a powder-blue sweater with matching bow tie. The question on the tongues of many was simply — “Why?”
Why is Chris Brown dressing like a 7-year-old about to give an Easter speech? It seems as though his handlers feel the best way to distance Chris from the violence and rage of that infamous night in February is to put him in androgynous outfits and/or dress him like Carlton Banks. But all it really does is make it seem like Chris’ mea culpas are all heavily calculated by someone who has no idea of what they’re doing. From the outfits, to the obvious scripting of his “apology,” to his not-ready-for-primetime performance when he sat down with Larry King, Brown must understand that he has everything riding on these appearances. You have to dress the part, sound the part and act the part — and most importantly, people have to believe you. So Chris Brown, fire your stylist, take a few notes from Kobe and Mike Vick and stop wearing pastels. NOW. –todd williams
