We must set goals for ourselves before life evaporates. Perform well in school until you get a diploma. For some, that is the end of the ride. Others never expect to complete high school. But those who set goals are more likely to graduate from college, build businesses and become titans of industry. They forge new systems to benefit the world. They patent their ingenuity and inventiveness. Yes, there are definite benefits to setting goals. Just look at the life of Muhammad Ali.
Boxer Muhammad Ali changed the world through his assault on social injustice. Although his initial goal was to become the heavyweight champion of the world, Ali became much more than just a warrior in the ring. He challenged America’s racist double standards. He stood up for his religious beliefs. He identified with the poor and the common man, and when he stood up for himself, he did so for the disenfranchised of the world also. He proclaimed himself the greatest of all time and because he set that expectation for himself, he became a champion for all of humanity. Ali sought to conquer boxing, but his reach extended far beyond the boxing ring, and for that we should all be grateful.
Each of us needs to set standards and goals, whether it is to obtain a Ph.D., forge groundbreaking technology, find a cure for incurable illnesses like sickle cell anemia and AIDS or paint museum-worthy portraits. You just might be the scientist who discovers a cure for cancer. Your innovation might help people live healthier and longer lives, reduce suffering and bring about a change in health delivery systems for those who are uninsured.
But before you do all those admirable things, you have to take one important step.
Set goals this year and write them down. Take the time to explore the world and become proficient in another language. Fly first class. Scale a mountain. Be kind and volunteer; allow others to feel the effects of your service. Take a moment to pray with strangers. The by-product of your efforts will be the best you possible. Happy Life, Happy New Beginnings.
Peace.
