Serena Williams Defends Her U.S. Open Title and Has an Answer for Oversized People in her New Book

serena williamsSerena Williams could be having the busiest summer in her life. In the last three months, Williams has won the 2009 Wimbledon championship, purchased a percentage of the Miami Dolphins with her big sister Venus, and she released a signature clothing line with the Home Shopping Network. As Williams defends her U.S. Open title, she’s also celebrating the release of her new memoir “On the Line.”

In the book, Williams reveals that she battled depression after the death of her sister Yetunde Price in 2003. She was so distraught that she attended therapy but never told anyone of her sessions. “It was a real dark period in my life,” Serena told People magazine. “I went through depression. I never even talked about it to my mom. No one knew I was in therapy, but I was. I was so close to her.”

Williams also addresses her insecurities with her weight and body tone. After being unhappy with the size of her thighs, Williams began to workout strenuously and stay active to remain fit. She credits Michelle Obama for proudly flaunting her toned arms. “I know that toned arms are in now,” Williams said. “Look at Michelle Obama. She has great arms, and I think it’s wonderful that she shows them off like that! I love her for that.”

On the tennis court, Williams continues to dominate. She is currently the No. 1 seed at the 2009 U.S. Open.-a.r.
