American Airlines is venturing into cyber space and launching BlackAtlas.com, a social networking site for the sophisticated African American traveler. African American filmmaker, author, columnist, music and culture critic and world traveler Nelson George has been appointed BlackAtlas’ travel expert-at-large. “I love to experience new cities, new food and meet new people. I love the thrill of experiencing black culture everywhere, and so many African Americans feel the same way I do,” shared George. “I want to entice more people to hit the road by giving them a different, and hopefully fresh, angle on travel through BlackAtlas.com.”
The site, which is set to go live on October 15, will offer members an opportunity to submit travel stories, videos and photos that are unique to the black community. George will provide travel tips and share his perspective and insight.
If you’re wondering if this is an atempt to generate revenue for the airline, American Airlines spokeswoman Stacey Frantz offers that this is an effort focused on “building brand loyalty in the African-American community.” Eventually, this site will be an informative online destination when planning your next trip. –cp
