Shyne’s Release Is Halted, Rapper May Face Deportation Because of Violent Crime Conviction

Shyne has spent the last eight years in prison following the infamous New Year’s Eve nightclub shooting in 2000. His expected release date was Tuesday, Oct. 5, but the rapper has remained in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. A rep for
the embattled rapper has confirmed that Shyne (born Jamal Barrow) is in federal
custody until his “future immigration status is determined.”

Shyne was born in Belize
and faces a similar situation as fellow rapper Slick Rick. Rick, a native of
the U.K.,
fought deportation for years following his release from prison for a first-degree manslaughter conviction.

Both
Slick Rick and Shyne were convicted of violent crimes and the repercussions for
those convictions extend far beyond establishing a rapper’s street cred. It not
only throws a rapper’s music career into limbo, but in the case of the
foreign-born rappers (and their numbers are growing exponentially), it can
result in the loss of U.S.
citizenship. New York Governor David Patterson had to pardon Slick Rick in
order for the rapper to finally be able to rest his head peacefully on U.S.
soil, and that was also following extensive lobbying by superstars like Will
Smith and Chris Rock.

Though many are speculating that Shyne could be deported as early as next
week, there have been no confirmations from any officials that this is the
case. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Web site, a
child born outside the U.S.
to a parent of American citizenship can become a citizen, but there are legal
variables.

“Whether someone born outside the United
States to a U.S.
citizen parent or parents is a U.S.
citizen depends on the law in effect when the person was born,” the
information reads.

So, like it or not, Shyne will have to wait a little bit
longer. Whether or not he resumes his life in Brooklyn, N.Y.,
or if he has to go back to Belize,
his circumstances serve as yet another reminder of the odds that rappers ace when they make a stupid decision.

Smarten up. The consequences of stupidity could reach farther than you
realize. –todd williams
