You saw him on Bill Bellamy’s “Who’s Got Jokes” during season three where he
was crowned the winning comedian. Now, Lav Luv is back with his own TV One special, “I Think I’m Gonna Get In Trouble!”
Lav Luv may be the newly-crowned “Who’s Got Jokes” comedian but he isn’t new to comedy. Upon returning from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, Lav Luv knew that he wanted to fully commit to pursuing his life-long dream of being a comedian. After a couple open-mic nights at the Uptown Comedy Corner, Lav Luv soon found himself with appearances on Showtime at the Apollo, BET’s Comic View and a member on the popular radio show, DJ Chip in The Mornings, in Columbus, Georgia. Lav Luv has opened up for the Isley Brothers, the Four Tops, the Temptations and Ashanti. He has toured with major comedians like Chris Tucker and Jamie Foxx.
The half-hour special, based on Lav Luv’s take on love, music and the ladies will have you crying-laughing. Don’t miss “I Think I’m Gonna Get In Trouble!” —iesha daniels
So tell us about your TV One show?
I won Bill Bellamy’s “Who Got Jokes” last season. One of the prizes for winning the show is, you get your own half-hour special, so that’s coming out this week. We went to L.A. and we filmed it. It’s the first time I ever felt like, ‘OK all of this hard work is starting to pay off, just a little bit.’
How do you find the inspiration to develop your material?
It’s just everyday life. One of the things I always say on stage is the best comedy is your own world. If you just pay attention to what’s going on around you, you’ll crack up on a regular basis because everybody is doing something that is hilarious.
Talk about the life of a comedian. A lot of people think you guys just make jokes and get on stage. Talk about the work and the actual research you have to do.
A lot of people don’t realize it’s an art form. I think it’s one of the most disrespected art form there is. Everybody has made somebody laugh at some point and time in their life. So people don’t respect it cause they figure it’s something they can do. They don’t realize that when you get on stage, it’s a different level to making people laugh.
Is there a certain school for comedy or certain comedian education you can get?
I think you either have it or you don’t. The stage teaches you everything you need to know. I can talk to you all day but until you get on stage—I can’t teach you how to read a crowd, I can’t teach you the timing of a joke. The stage is the class. You got to get on stage.
