Thanksgiving 2009 marked the 40th anniversary of Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless. Volunteers came from all over the city to help serve those in need. Radio personalities DJ Drama, Frank Ski, and Wanda Smith rallied to recruit Atlantans to support the cause. Thanks to private and corporate donations, as well as canned food drives, thousands of unfortunate individuals and families in the Atlanta were able to enjoy meals on Thanksgiving Day.

The fare was a little different this year, since the organization partnered with Fulton County and the DeKalb County Board of Health to offer free doses of the H1N1 flu vaccine. Each contributed 200 doses for a total of 400 vaccines which the Morehouse School of Medicine helped to administer. The swine flu has been spreading rapidly since the beginning of the year and has already killed a number of Americans.
Although the lines for food and medicine wrapped around Turner Stadium, those in need waited patiently in the brisk morning air. Grateful recipients expressed their appreciation for the Hosea Feed the Hungry organization, which exemplifies how the collective efforts of a community can make a difference in individual lives.
Well known activist Hosea Williams founded the organization, and since his death, his daughter Elizabeth Omilami continues his mission. –christian johnson
