Baltimore’s first Black female mayor convicted

altOn Tuesday, Dec. 1, Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon was found guilty of misdemeanor fraudulent misappropriation by a fiduciary for using gift cards that were donated to poor citizens of Baltimore. Dixon, who is a West Baltimore native and the city’s first black female mayor, was acquitted of three other charges, including one felony charge.

Prosecutors said that Dixon misused nearly $1,500 worth of gift cards. She was accused of using the cards to purchase personal items at Target, Toys “R” Us, Old Navy and Best Buy.

If Dixon is removed from office, City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will succeed her as mayor.

Dixon issued the following statement: “Today, I thank God for the strength He has given me. I want to thank my family for their undying support, and all of my staff, supporters, and friends for the countless prayers and encouraging words. Thank you for standing by me.

“The jury’s verdict today does not impact my responsibility to continue serving and I remain focused on keeping Baltimore on course in these trying economic times.

“I want the people of this great city to know that my administration is fortunate to have a talented and dedicated team of professionals running city agencies and departments. Like me, my team remains focused on the everyday business of this city.

“I am blessed with the opportunity to serve the people of Baltimore.”

Dixon faces another trial in March 2010 for two perjury counts related to failure to report gifts.
