Precious, the shocking and uplifting story of an obese teen who overcomes physical and emotional abuse, garnered two Golden Globe nominations for its lead stars, Mo’Nique and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe. Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman also received a nod for Invictus.
As expected, Precious‘ powerhouse executive producing team of Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry did not garner a nomination, nor was the movie nominated for a best film award.
On the day the Golden Globe Awards nominations are announced, forecasters predicted that Mo’Nique’s brilliant portrayal of an abusive mother would earn her a nod, as well as the movie Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. The Golden Globes are the movie industry’s most prestigious awards gala in advance of the Academy Awards and is often an indicator of who will be nominated for Oscars. For example, Jamie Foxx was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards for 2004’s Ray and Collateral. Foxx won the Best Acting Oscar for Ray and received a Best Supporting Actor nod for Collateral opposite Tom Cruise and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Morgan Freeman, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Million Dollar Baby, is nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as former South African president Nelson Mandela in Invictus. It would be the third consecutive Freeman-Clint Eastwood collaboration to receive multiple award nominations, following 1992’s Unforgiven and 2004’s Million Dollar Baby.
