The AKA chapter adopted a family of of seven girls ranging in age from 6 to 13, who lost their father over a year ago and had been suffering from financial difficulty. Gay became aware of the family’s plight after being approached by a school social worker. The Greek organization helped the family purchase gifts for the 2008 Christmas holidays, but a year later the family was still suffering financially, so the sorors once again rolled up their sleeves to lend a hand.
The family of girls received clothing, toiletries, and items from their own personal wish-list such as MP3 players and Barbie dolls. “We decided to go back and get in touch with the family, and we saw that [they were] still a family need,” explains Gay. “Shopping wasn’t that difficult, we had a budget that we had to work with so we were able to find some wonderful deals. We were able to meet the needs of that family, and then some,” says chapter secretary Rebecca.
The philanthropic women hope that the 2010 year will hold more promise for this family, and the community as a whole. The gift of scholarships to local high school students, is one of the AKA chapters primary commitments. Local fundraisers will provide additional support to assist families in the Atlanta metropolitan area. –christian johnson
