Oscar-nominated actress Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) was an audience favorite at the sixth annual Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) in Nassau. The Brit-raised beauty of half Nigerian, half European-Jewish heritage was glowing when she was awarded the Rising Star Tribute Award. Okonedo starred in one of the festival’s feature films, Skin, which is  based on the true story of Sandra Laing —

a black girl born to white parents during South Africa’s apartheid era. When asked during a Q&A session with Moving Pictures’ editor-at-large Elliot Kotek, how she chooses her roles, she bluntly shared: “I don’t do crap,” prompting laughter and applause from the audience.

Other honorees at this year’s festival included actor Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean), who was bestowed the Career Achievement Tribute presented by Sir Sean Connery; and Gavin McKinney (Day of the Dolphin), an underwater filmmaker who received a special Bahamian Ambassador Tribute Award.

BIFF, a nonprofit organization committed to providing the local community and international festivalgoers with a diverse presentation of films from the island and around the world, is the brainchild of executive director Leslie Vanderpool. –yvette caslin
