Mark and Kimberly Coleman Talk About Their New Salon

alt

In any relationship — friendship, work or marriage — but especially marriage there has to be some give and take, some cause and effect, some ebb and flow. Kimberly Coleman and her husband Mark, who have been happily married for nine years, recently opened the Kimberly Coleman Salon at the New South Loop Hotel in Chicago. The handsome couple is the perfect example of how a family that works together stays together.

How did you decide on this location?

Kim: It started about six months ago.  Someone came to us and told us about this space that was available in the South Loop Hotel. We were looking to re-locate our salon away from the hustle and bustle of downtown.  We wanted a space with parking [that] was easy to get to and centrally located. Location is everything in Chicago and free parking was an added bonus.

There are a number of architectural aesthetics, tell me about that?

Kim: We came in and my husband and I fell in love with the space. He actually designed the space. We wanted something unique—something different. So we incorporated a lot of different touches that you probably won’t find any place else.

Mark:  I am not an architect by trade, but Kim and I both like curves, color and light. The curves you see in our space are intentional. They soften those edges that clients develop after a hard day at work or life in general.  We chose colors that are suggestive of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Why did you decide to go into business?

Kim: My aunt owned a beauty college and I have been doing hair since the sixth grade. When I moved to Chicago from Alabama I hustled. I worked in three salons building a clientele and from there I eventually ventured out on my own and here I am now 14 years later.

Tell me about your business approach?

Mark: The current economy forces most people to pay closer attention to their time as much as their money. Our business model is built to maximize time and value.  All services are driven by appointments which can be booked on line 24/7 365 days per year. We have combined the amenities of a full service salon and spa with the conveniences of a major hotel. So in addition to the personal care and experience that you get from our Signature Team at Kimberly Coleman Salon, you can also enjoy the essence of a beautiful boutique hotel for your business or pleasure.
