Buttersweet: African American Celebrities' Favorite Bakery

Buttersweet Bakery in historic downtown Hapeville, just outside Atlanta, is a hot spot favored by celebs. This mom-and-pop bakery owned by husband and wife duo Darrell Calhoun and Charlita Varner has been around for about three years, but lately it’s grown into a national sensation thanks to their yummy key lime cupcakes that even Oprah’s Harpo Studio staff couldn’t ignore. The company ordered a dozen for movie maker and mogul Tyler Perry in celebration of his studio grand opening

Atlanta Journal-Constitution staffers voted this boutique bakery’s slightly rich red velvet cupcakes the best in the city for Valentine’s Day 2008, making it a favorite among lovebirds in the ATL. Buttersweet has also been featured in a dozen publications, including Bon Appétit magazine, twice. So what makes the cupcakes so special?
“We use the Key West, Florida key lime — sought after by gourmet chefs everywhere — for our key lime-inspired desserts,” says Calhoun. “We also use only the best ingredients and every product is individually made with no mass production.”

According to one customer, Connie Harris, a Delta flight attendant who comes into the bakery for the red velvet cupcakes, “The smooth creamy icing makes it a pleasure to eat!”

But Buttersweet isn’t just about cupcakes — celebs like record producer Jermaine Dupri ordered a special cake for his baby girl’s birthday party last year. And MTV’s “My Super Sweet 16” featured Buttersweet’s Paris Eiffel Tower cake for a Moulin Rouge-themed party for Sky, known by her friends as Atlanta’s Royal Rap Princess.alt
Entertainers aren’t the only ones flocking to this sweet shop, Congressman John Lewis loves roosters, so the bakery was commissioned to create a life-sized rooster cake for his birthday a couple years ago.

Buttersweet has also been the location for a devilish romance, setting the scene for one of BET’s “Hell Date” episodes. BET came back for another sugar fix for the hip-hop awards, ordering an assortment of desserts for the green room.
