Charles Matthews: Guiding the Next Generation as a Big Brother

Charles Matthews, is the CEO of Matthews Enterprises LLC and  the national spokes person for  the Omega Psi Phi partnership with big brothers and big sisters.  Matthew’s became involved in the organazation after attending a meeting at the local big brother big sister chapter.  “My wife had been encouraging me to get involved  with the school system.  I also got the challenge from my Omega Psi Phi fraternity  that we needed to get involved,” say Matthews.  Being a member of corporate America he wasn’t happy with the inadequacies he’d been experiencing on his job, so he saw where there was a need for change.
He is currently the big brother of Rico Johnson, whom he started mentoring in the fifth grade.  The relationship  between the two gentlemen is one that has taken years to build. “Rico was a really angry young man, a true statistic failure that would probably be dead or in prison by now.  It took me about a year to first convince him to trust me and that it wasn’t about me it was about him,” states Matthew.   Rico is now a senior in high school and is thinking about pursuing a degree in the medical field.
So often many of our young people are left without parental guidance.  Due to the social and economic status in our country, parents  are having to work longer hours in order to provide for their families.  Big Brother Big Sister is an opportunity for dededicated members of society to lend a hand and help to keep our youth on the right track, because ultimately all it takes is time and someons showing that they care.

In the midst of the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression, many parents are working longer hours in order to provide for their families. In their parents’ absence, some young people are left to fend for themselves, which is where organizations like Big Brother Big Sister can step in to provide the guidance necessary to keep youngsters on the right track. –christian johnson
