Washington, Baltimore Best Cities to Find Work; Detroit is Worst

alt

President Barack Obama’s titanic proportioned bailout packages have produced an unlikely positive effect for residents in and around “The Beltway” —mainly Washington and Baltimore: The two cities rank at the top of the JuJu.com list of best American cities to find work.

Job search engine JuJu.com compiled a list of best and worst cities to find work in after gathering statistics released by the U.S. Department of Labor. JuJu compared the number of job hunters to the number of postings on their site. They state that, according to their calculations based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are less than two unemployed individuals per advertised job opening in the nation’s capital. Baltimore is ranked third trailing closely behind San Jose, Calif., with 2.68 unemployed individuals per advertised job opening. San Jose is the epicenter of Silicon Valley activity and sports icons.

Detroit and the state of Michigan, ravaged by the collapse of the American auto industry, ranks at the bottom of the list of cities and states in terms of unemployment, respectively. Detroit has a jaw-dropping 20 unemployed individuals for every advertised job on JuJu.com.

Rival job search site Indeed.com, compiles their numbers using a different formula, but also places Washington at the top of the list for American cities with the most job prospects. The Milken Institute, a nonpartisan think tank, examined smaller cities by matching median wages versus cost of living, taxes and technology, says the Huffington Post. Their findings indicate that Texas cities like Midland, Longview, Tyler, Odessa, College Station and Texarkana reportedly dominate the list. –terry shropshire
