Brooklyn, N.Y., rapper UKNO THA DON has a bright outlook on 2010. With his new album, Testimony, dropping this spring, UKNO talked to rolling out about what inspires him and where his career is headed. –iesha daniels
Tell us what you’ve been up to.
I had a video released recently called ‘Red Eye Red’ and I just finished wrapping up my new single, ‘Runway,’ which is my first official single off my album. [I’m] just getting ready to do charity work, volunteer work and stuff of that nature.
What inspires you to rap?
What inspired me then were my cousins, they had a DJ set and they used to go around to different venues and play. I used to pick up the mic and just mimic the reggae artists that would come on and do it so well that people would respond to it. I started branching off and listening to hip-hop. What inspires me now is my beautiful daughter and the loss of my son.
What’s in store for UKNO in 2010?
I’ve been through the trials and tribulations, so it’s time for the world to know who UKNO is and hear my testimony. I believe hip-hop now is stagnant, it’s so gimmicky, everyone’s in it for a fast buck. I believe artists have a bigger voice in the community than the president, pastors, teachers or even their parents. What’s in store for me is to get my music, my testimony out there and touch the world.
